Liposuction
Cosmetic Care Clinic has a type of liposuction available called tumescent liposuction. It is a procedure, which uses local anesthetic in a solution. It is injected into the area to be treated. Tumescent Liposuction is safer than older methods of surgical liposuction. Other alternatives and complementary treatments to liposuction include weight loss, mesotherapy, and carboxy therapy.
In this Tumescent Liposuction procedure, local anesthetic is infused into the treatment area. Small tubes are used to draw back the undesired fatty tissue. After the fatty tissue is removed, the small entry holes created for the tubes are left open intentionally for the leftover fluid to drain out. Bandages and a compressive garment are used to absorb the fluid and assist in its drainage.
Normal tumescent liposuction after effects include: swelling of the treatment area, fluid drainage, and a tiny amount of bleeding, tenderness or a ‘bruised’ feeling, and bruising.
Lesser risks of Tumescent Liposuction include: a small risk of infection, more substantial discomfort, and more significant swelling.
Based on a recent study of 75,591 patients having both the higher risk surgical liposuction and the safer tumescent liposuction, serious risks include: blood clot (25 patients), anesthetic side effects (23 patients), fat embolism (1 patient), pulmonary embolism (9 patients), skin damage (5 patients), stroke (1 patient), and death (2 patients).
Each person is unique, and although the tumescent liposuction procedure is highly effective, results do vary. We welcome your questions. If you think you might be a candidate for this Tumescent Liposuction procedure, please book your personal consultation today.
Pre-operative Tumescent Liposuction Instructions:
• Please have your pre-op blood work done a minimum of one week before the procedure.
• Please discuss all the medications and vitamins you are taking with the consultant. If your health permits, we want you to stop your aspirin, ibuprofen Motrin / Advil, Vitamin E, and green tea 10 days before the procedure.
• Advise the consultant if you are taking any weight loss medicine or heart medicine, as they may interact with the freezing and special arrangements will need to be made.
• Have a shower using antibacterial soap the night before and the morning of your procedure.
• Avoid all moisturizing creams and powder after your shower on the day of the procedure.
• Remove all nail polish and artificial nails (if possible) because they interfere with our finger oxygen monitoring unit.
• No eating after midnight the night before your procedure. You can have water.
• Please take all your regular medications – if in doubt, ask the consultant.
• Please arrange for a driver – you must not drive yourself home as you will be given a very mild relaxing sedative during your procedure.
Post-operative Tumescent Liposuction Instructions:
• If you have any discomfort after your procedure, you may take Tylenol or any acetaminophen-based product (i.e. extra strength, or with codeine). Please avoid ASA such as Aspirin.
• You will experience fluid drainage after your treatment. It is a desired and normal part of healing. However, it can soil your upholstery or bedding. Please consider placing plastic sheeting on your car seat, furniture and mattress until the draining subsides.
• Eat a balanced light diet for the first 48 hours after this procedure.
• Drink lots of fresh water – ideally, two litres on the first day. Consider using bottled water in order to be certain of the quantity.
• Gentle walking encourages the drainage of the fluid and circulation. Please make a special effort to move around after your procedure. Please walk a minimum of 10 minutes for every two hours while awake for the first day or two.
• Please return to the Clinic for your follow up visits. Please ensure that we have good contact numbers and instructions for you. Let us know if we need to be careful about messages.
• Your post-op bandage will come off the day after your procedure. We will give you instructions about any further dressings as you need them.
• Please take all your preventative antibiotics.
• Please cleanse the drainage sites twice daily with antibacterial soap and apply sterile gauze over the sites. You will need to do this twice daily beginning after your first follow up appointment and continue for five days or until healed.
• You may resume your regular showering at 48 hours post treatment.
• Remember, we are here to help you. Call us if you have any concerns.

[...] Liposuction: We offer a type of liposuction called ‘tumescent liposuction’. This Body Contouring technique is done under local anesthetic in an office environment. Large volumes of dilute local anesthetic are infused into the stubborn fatty pocket, after the freezing begins to work; the fatty pocket is reduced using a very small tube. After the Body Contouring procedure, the area is wrapped with a contouring girdle for several weeks. This Body Contouring treatment works best when done with mesotherapy. The mesotherapy before the liposuction softens and prepares the tissue. After the procedure, mesotherapy helps to reshape the final contour. [...]
