Level of experience

The amount of time a doctor has been doing a specific procedure and the number of treatments done per day or week are often good basic indicators of the level of experience. Many cosmetic treatments are manual treatments. These treatments can be considered a form of art – and art takes practice. You need to ask pointed, specific questions. An example of a good question would be:

Q:Doctor, how long have you been doing Botox injections? Please be specific. How many Botox treatments do you currently average in any given week?

Be careful about how you interpret the answer! A less experienced doctor may answer this question, either verbally or on the clinic’s web site this way:

A: I have been performing medical cosmetic and surgical procedures for more than six years.

This answer is deceptive! It does not directly address the issue at hand. If it is Botox that you, as a client, wish to have done, what matters is how long and how many times the doctor has performed the procedure.

It is Botox treatments the doctor has done, not how many “cosmetic medical treatments” (i.e. like skin tags) they may have removed over the last five or six years. Be careful how you interpret the answers you receive. A vague answer should raise more questions in your mind! If in any doubt, re-address the issue with a request about Botox, or the procedure you are interested in, in clear, specifics. An example of a follow-up question to the answer above would be:

Q: Yes Doctor, six years of cosmetic medical treatments, but please tell me, how long for Botox specifically? And, how many Botox treatments do you do on an average day?

In addition, call the manufacturer such as Allergan, the Botox maker. You can check the references the Doctor gives you. Be wary of vague answers such as the ones mentioned above. Not only are they suspect, demonstrating a lack of true experience, but they also make the integrity of the facility doubtful. Remember, there is only one you! Don’t be afraid to ask the questions or verify the answers. It is in your best interest to do so!
