Wrinkles unwanted

Wrinkles affect all people. Young people tend to experience ‘dynamic wrinkles’. Dynamic wrinkles are wrinkles which appear with expression and facial movement. Over time ‘dynamic’ wrinkles cause creases in the skin which remain even at rest (static wrinkles). In addition, our sleep posture can cause our faces to become creased. These are the lines that we tend to notice the most in the morning, and they tend to improve over the day. Time passage can cause our collagen to degrade, and this process can cause the skin to lose its tone and take on a crepe-like appearance. The sun and smoking can speed up the destruction of collagen. The amount of wrinkling, and the cause of the wrinkle are both important considerations when deciding what treatment would be optimal for you. When you come to Cosmetic Care, our knowledgeable personal image consultants will review your issues and help to guide you in your treatment decision path.

There are several ways to address wrinkle issues. A good healthy balance approach is always recommended. The first step in this journey is to begin with:

1) Prevention: Good skin care. Our staff can advise you on quality skin care products for UV protection, the use of topical vitamin C, the use of live stabilized cellular creams, and the use of your DNA analysis for customized anti-aging skin care

2) Active Wrinkle Correction Treatment – Here you have options: Botox, Fillers (Restylane), erbium laser resurfacing or combinations of these treatments

Upper Face: Botox is often the first choice for lines of the upper face. It is gentle wrinkle correction through relaxing the overactive facial expression muscles. Regular treatments with Botox are highly preventative of further wrinkle progression – a true and unique benefit. Botox works best on the dynamic facial lines (the ones that are exaggerated by expression). When there has been the development of a permanent line (a ‘static’ line – a line at rest), Botox is still the first treatment of choice to soften the problem movement. However a filler (Restylane) would be used to help further soften the residual line. We are proud to share with you that Cosmetic Care is a leader in Botox. Dr Brown serves our Canadian Botox colleagues as a regional trainer and in-service education provider for experienced Botox physicians. Dr Brown has been chosen personally by Allergan Canada (the makers of Botox) for this role. Dr Brown has the most up-to-date techniques and training. Come see why we say “experience the difference experience makes!”

Lower Face: Fillers (Restylane, Perlane, Dermalive / Dermadeep) are used as a first choice for lines of the lower face. These fillers are made of bio-compatible gels called Hyaluronic acid. They are lab made copies of our natural hyaluronic acid; they do not come from animals. These fillers are used to plump up the wrinkle from below with their jello-like structure. They dissolve away into water over time. We use fillers in lines of the lower face, in the lip, and in the lines of the upper face (in addition to Botox). In special situations Botox is used in the lower face to complement the fillers (i.e. to reduce the lip pucker lines, and the mouth-frown).

Full face:

Minimal downtime (a weekend +/- a day) with great effects can be experienced with the PIXEL laser.  In this 6 step treatment process, small islands of skin in areas of wrinkles and scars are vaporized away.  The body’s own natural healing process then fills in the small areas with fresh new skin.  This laser can be used in all areas of the face, neck, chest, and hands.  After this procedure, skin care, botox, and sun avoidance can extend the effects for many years.

Most aggressive option: The full face can be treated by means of laser resurfacing using the Errbium laser. In this 3-step treatment process, the top layers of wrinkled skin are whisked away by the vaporizing action of the laser. Fresh new skin replaces the older damaged skin leaving a longstanding improvement in the skin’s appearance. This treatment is also used to soften moderate scarring. We recommend this treatment as a full face treatment. However, if our patient desires, the treatment can just be used on a trouble zone such as the mouth or eye area. After laser resurfacing, excellent skin care and judicious use of Botox can take these great results and extend them for many years.

What about…..? Microdermabrasion – this is more of a complexion treatment than a wrinkle treatment. It works very well with all of the above treatment options, but, it is not designed for wrinkle care. What about IPL (intense pulsed light)? IPL is a first choice for individuals with color problems – like pigmentation or flushing blood vessels. Yes, it is true that in some cases fine wrinkles improve and the skin may tighten. However, it is important to note that these great wrinkle / tightening outcomes are not as predictable as with Botox, Fillers and Resurfacing. IPL is a great choice in conjunction with any of the above.

    PIXEL Skin Resurfacing

The PIXEL Laser is an effective treatment for multiple skin problems. Most common uses for this device are for softening:

    • Acne scarring – particularly the shallow rolling scars
Wrinkles – most effective on mild to moderate, even on delicate areas around the eyes and the mouth
Pigmentation problems – can reduce the pigmentation caused by sun exposure and the passage of time

The PIXEL laser is quite a precise laser. This laser works by vaporizing away small islands of problem skin in an extremely controlled fashion. It can be used on small areas and larger ones, for example treating the area around the eyes or mouth or treating the entire face..

For larger areas, such as for a full face resurfacing, or a facial area treatment, the process requires greater client commitment. An important part of this process is the consultation. At the consultation, a review of your health, medications, allergies and objectives is taken. This review is followed by a thorough explanation of the process, including showing you photographs of consenting clients at various stages of their healing.

In this treatment, the client prepares the skin with the application of a topical anesthetic cream one hour before the procedure. During the treatment, the client is laying comfortably on the treatment bed. The laser is pulsed over the problem skin. After the treatment, freezing cream is applied on to the skin to keep the client comfortable. A vacuum device is used during the procedure to whisk away the undesired vaporized skin.

After the treatment, medicated creams are applied. It is expected that the skin will be quite rosy for a minimum of three days, on some occasions, a week. After the first three days, concealing makeup can be used to minimize the rosy tone until it subsides. The skin will have areas that look and feel like there are little coffee grounds for the first 5-7 days. This is the dry skin preparing to leave the body. It will fall away on it’s own revealing fresh, smoother skin.

Like all medical procedures, there are some side effects and potential limitations of the treatment. We are dedicated to providing full pre treatment education, so that each client may participate in their treatment choices. We pay close attention to your objectives, lifestyle, and ability to tolerate downtime, comfort, and budget issues. We welcome your questions.

If you think that this may be a treatment option for you, please book your consultation with one of our knowledgeable staff today.
