Susan asks ” WHAT CAN BE DONE FOR SUN DAMAGED SKIN WITH FINE LINES”

To answer that question we must first examine how this process begins.

One of the problems that effect everyone  is something called “FREE RADICAL DAMAGE”.  Basically our cells use oxygen to produce energy. In the process they generate free radicals. These are unstable or damaged oxygen molecules that multiply. Free radicals can be produced by a variety of different sources like cigarette smoke, toxins such as pesticides, air pollution and most definitely sun exposure. When these free radicals attack the collagen molecules in our skin the result can be discoloration (hyperpigmentation), the appearance of fine lines  and the loss of elasticity .

THATS THE BAD NEWS !

The ”GOOD NEWS” is that we can limit our free radical damage by way of vitamin rich foods, supplements, limited sun overexposure, good skin care and in general, a healthier lifestyle.   

In the case of non-envasive medical procedures that can help to reverse or diminish the surface damage, I would recommend several such as Microdermabrasion, Peels and Pixel Laser Skin Resurfacing.  The Microdermabrasion and Peels are usually more appropriate for a superficial short term gain. The Pixel Laser Skin Resurfacing is a longer lasting solution that penetrates the deeper layers of skin  improving skin texture and tone, smoothing wrinkles and diminishing brown spots .  (Please refer to the website for further explanation of the above treatments).

As with any medical procedure, it is important to receive an in-depth consultation to address your concerns, determine the current condition of your skin  and to discuss a treatment plan best suited to your needs.

Stephen asked what is the safest and least invasive treatment to remove moles.

There are several options to consider depending on the type of mole. One treatment option is “Liquid Nitrogen”, which is often used with raised flesh colored or pigment moles. This treatment causes immediate “frostbite” damaging the undesired tissue. This stimulates the body to start a natural rejection process where the immune system clears away the damaged tissue over a period of 7-14 days. Another treatment could be” Hyfrecation”. This uses an electrical device to damage the raised mole. The body then rejects the damaged tissue and heals the remaining skin approximately over the same peroid of time as with the Liquid Nitrogen treatments. A third option might be “Laser Removal”, used for  flat pigmented moles.

As with any medical treatment, it is important to know what to expect from your treatment and to  be advised of any possible side effects and potential complications.  Some mild side effects might be but not limited to tenderness and redness.  Potential complications could include local infection, a disruption in pigment-often temporary, but can be permanent  on rare occasions and scarring.    

That is why after care is also very important as it lowers the side effect risk. We recommend washing the treated area twice a day and coating the area with an antibacterial ointment until the skin resumes a normal, smooth appearance. It is also important to limit sun exposure during the healing period.

When we work on the human body , it is completely impossible to accurately predict  your exact response. There are many factors that make each one of us unique. These factors such as: genetics, lifestyle, health issues etc. can cause each of us to respond differently. It is possible  that occasionally a person can have a less optimal response. Where possible and when appropriate we may offer an alternate treatment or supplemental care.

Finally, first and foremost, it is imperative to receive a correct diagnoses  from a health professional to rule out any suspect moles or lesions and to determine the correct form of treatment.

Paul asked me if Botox for Migraines and Headaches really works.

Botox for Migraines was an accidental discovery.  Reports that botox for migraines worked started surfacing in year 2000, and since then several studies have been done.

The University Of California delivered in a presentation at the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery meeting in 2000 and Richard Glogau, MD, UCSF professor of dermatology, reported that 75 percent of patients in his case study experienced four to six months of Migraine relief following injections of Botox® to muscles of the face and head.

However, like any medicine and research, some studies will disprove that botox really works and that it’s nothing more than a placebo effect.  For example, a major insurance company has stopped paying for Botox for Migraines as a result of the research they compiled.  Here’s an interesting read: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/health/2008180063_botox15m1.html

If you talk to some patients with severe migraines, they will tell you that Botox  relieved their suffering, and brought back some sanity into their lives.  If you talk to others, some will say it had little to no effect.

Every patient is different.  Every patient suffers from migraines for different reasons.  If your migraine is stress related, than Botox may be a solution for you.
